Route 66 in Tulsa, Oklahoma (Part 2)

 

In Part 1 I focused on the portion of Route 66 on 11th street between South Peoria Avenue and South Lewis Avenue. This post will be about other Route 66 sights in Tulsa.

Right in downtown Tulsa is the Blue Dome building. It headlines the Blue Dome Historic District.  To no ones surprise, the roof is a blue dome.  This used to be a Gulf Oil service station, second floor was used as office space and the residence for the manager was in the dome.  Route66Times has more about this.


Blue Dome is on an earlier alignment of Route 66, the current road doesn't go by it.

Sinclair service station
This two-bay gas station was built in 1929 and is in the "Spanish Eclectic". The deep canopy goes out to the pump island, although the pumps are no longer there. After the gas station closed various other companies have occupied it, most recently Rossi Brothers Co, but I think they have moved one building down. 

Hotel Campbell

This opened as the Casa Loma Hotel. That hotel is long gone, but a boutique Hotel Campbell operates there now.  The building was built by Max W. Campbell in 1927.  A restaurant is currently in the part of the building closest to the camera.

 

This faded sign is for CS Motors, "We Finance Everyone!"  It used to have neon and lots of light bulbs on the arrows but no longer does. Prior to this it was Clay's Motor Co.

Arby's Roast Beef
It's been a long time since I've see one of these old-time Arby's restaurant signs. It is a giant hat that says "Arby's Roast Beef Sandwich Is Delicious".  There are actually two Arby's with signs like this in and around Tulsa, the other one is a bit farther out.

11th Street Bridge
On the left is the Eleventh Street Bridge that carries Route 66 over the Arkansas River.  In the middle is the old bridge, it is fenced off so you can't even walk on it and you can see grass growing in the cracks.  In the Foreground is Cyrus Avery Memorial Plaza with a sculpture of a horse and wagon meeting a new-fangled car.

Just this year Tulsa installed a musical road that will play "This Land is Your Land" if you drive across it at the right speed. This where it is. The car you see on the bridge is driving over it and undoubtedly listening to the melody.

Neon Park

On the far side of the old 11th street bridge is a neon park with recreations of several old neon signs.  There is no parking so it is hard to get to, but you can park on the other side of the bridge and either take the sidewalk over the new bridge, or, on the left, is the interstate bridge and under that is a walker/biker path.

One of a couple of signs at the eastern end of Williams, this one celebrating the Route 66 centennial, which is this year. Williams is a decent sized town of 3,200 people and lots and lots of hotels. It also is where the Grand Canyon Railway starts, allowing you to take a day trip to the Grand Canyon. Of note, Williams was the last place on Route 66 that was bypassed by Interstate 40. Hackberry, Arizona on Route 66

  Hackberry General Store Hackberry, AZ is effectively just the general store and a few acres of land around it. It is very much worth a stop for a drink and to look around. I went there twice, once in the evening on my drive east, then again when I came back west. The store is a low building that has it's front wall covered in stickers. There is a good sized parking area there. The address is 11255 E. Hwy 66, Hackberry, AZ 86411.   It used to be a gas station and there are at least 7 gas pumps out front, however, they are not all the same kind so they are probably not all from there (or at least not all active at the same time). Bellemont, Arizona on Route 66

  Richfield gas station, side view   Bellemont is really small, and, the interesting part (from a traveling Route 66 perspective) is even smaller. It is really just one or two places. Get off I-40 at exit 185 and go towards Camp Navajo. Once there, take a left.  You'll drive  less than two miles then you'll get to the main stop (for me, anyway).  Richfield Gas Station / Pine Breeze Inn is our stop.  It's the white building with a sign saying "Richfield" on the front.   Here's the side view. Note the ghost sight, above the gold bar it says "Pine Breeze Inn" (not that you can read it) and below the gold bar it says "All Credit Cards Accepted" (I'd suggest using one that expired in the 1960's).  There is a single gas pump remaining on the pump island under the overhang.   This old Ford It is rare to see a car in such bad shape.
