Hackberry, Arizona on Route 66

 

Hackberry General Store
Hackberry, AZ is effectively just the general store and a few acres of land around it. It is very much worth a stop for a drink and to look around. I went there twice, once in the evening on my drive east, then again when I came back west.

The store is a low building that has it's front wall covered in stickers. There is a good sized parking area there. The address is 11255 E. Hwy 66, Hackberry, AZ 86411.

 


It used to be a gas station and there are at least 7 gas pumps out front, however, they are not all the same kind so they are probably not all from there (or at least not all active at the same time). There are also a few picnic tables out front if you want to stay for a while

If you are traveling Route 66 you should know about the Route 66 passport. some visitor centers will give it to you free, other places charge a nominal fee. It has photos of various places along Rt-66 with a few bullet points about them.  For many of them there is also space for a postmark-style stamp, much like the National Parks Passport, if you are familiar with them.  Hackberry General Store is one of the places and they have multiple sizes and ink colors to choose from.  I didn't get a passport, but I do stamp my travel journal.

 

In addition to the store, there are a number of old cars sitting outside that you can walk around, including this this nice station wagon with only some rust.

These cars were right at the back of the parking area.  There are an additional 4 acres of artifacts and things to see behind and to the right of the general store.  The first time I went the area was open, but when I came back it wasn't.  The person working inside the store told me because the area had active rattlesnakes, so I don't think it is a permanent closure.

Topock and Golden Shores Arizona on Route 66

Exit 1 in Arizona  I didn't though. I came in to Arizona from Needles, California. On the right as I crossed the Colorado River I saw the white arch "Old Trails" bridge. This bridge now carries a pipeline but used to Route 66.  After crossing the bridge I got off at the first exit but couldn't find a good spot to take the pictures. There aren't that many Route 66 specific sights in the Topock/Goldon Shores part of Arizona, and somehow I missed taking pictures of one of the important ones, so a few of these photos are from Wikimedia Commons instead of being ones I took.   Historic Old Trails Bridg e built in 1914 in Topock, Az. Sitgreaves Pass and Cool Springs Station, Arizona

  Sitgreaves Memorial Viewpoint This section of Route 66 is the curviest and steepest portion of the road.  It is an 8 mile section of the road that goes from Oatman, Arizona up Sitgreaves Pass. It is also called the "Arizona Sidewinder" because it has 191 or so curves and switchbacks with no guardrails.  It sounds scary, but as long as you go slow (everyone else is too, don't worry) it isn't as bad as it sounds. I'll note, however, that I was driving west to east which means I was on the inside of the road the whole time.  Maybe if I was driving east to west and was right up against the drop I'd have a different opinion. Summit Station and Ice Cream Parlor was at this turnout just below the summit. Needles California on Route 66

  Sage Motel As I was driving in to Needles and on my way to my hotel, I saw the Sage Motel.  That looks like a Route 66 era motel I better take a picture. A few minutes later I realized that this is on historic Rt-66, which makes sense. It is no longer a hotel, but it is still in use. 1624 W Broadway St, Needles, CA. ( Learn more ) Needles is a town of around five thousand people in California right across the Colorado River from Arizona. Needles was founded by the Atchison, Topeka and Sata Fe railway. The railroad, now part of the BNSF Railway, is still a major employer in the city.  If you are traveling the path of Route 66, this will be the first city you come to in California.    Route 66 car wash Miranda's Car Wash is just two blocks away from the Sage Motel. This do it yourself car wash has a Route 66 mural on the side.  Looking at google streetview tells me it has been closed for about 10 years. and the mural went up sometime between 2009 and 2011....
