Winslow, Arizona welcome sign on the west side of town
Welcome to Winslow. There is enough in this town that I split it into two posts, you can (and should) read Winslow (Part 1). That post was mostly about downtown and places being actively maintained. This post is has more out-of-the-way and less maintained or even abandoned places.

The subway in Winslow
You might thing that Winslow is too small to have a subway, but you'd be wrong, there are several signs like this that clearly say "subway" so they must have one. They aren't talking about an electrified commuter underground rail line like everyone else, but they are talking about an underpass that takes Williamson Avenue underneath the railroad tracks. Yup, the "subway" is just a road, sorry. It was built in 1936 to cross the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railway (now BNSF).

Highway Diner
The nondescript brown building (the one closer to the camera, not the one just beyond it) wasn once a colorful red and white "Nifty-Nine" diner named "Highway Diner") At one time it was open 24 hours a day. It has been closed since at least 2009.

Jay's Garage
This was once a gas station (Whiting Bros.) with an attached motel. The motel is still there to the right of this picture but looks unused. The garage is also unoccupied but it looks like someone is making an effort to refurbish it.

Southwest Indian Art Center
Just off Exit 252 of Interstate 40, directly across the street from a 76 gas station is what is clearly once a gas station, but now is the Southwest Indian Art Center.

Abandoned Gas Station
Just across from both the Southwest Indian Art Center and the 76 station is this abandoned former gas station. From the colors on canopy it was likely either a 76 gas station or Gulf gas station. Unusual for abandoned gas stations, the pumps are still installed.
