Peach Springs, Arizona on Route 66

Peach Springs is a small but active town run by the Hualapai tribe. There is a modern hotel there, the Hualapai Lodge and you can leave for day-long Grand Canyon rafting tours. 

This building is currently being used by the Hualapai Game and Fish department and the Hualapai Tribal Forestry Office.  Before that it was the Hualapai Trading Co and before that, it was the Peach Springs Trading Post. You can see the remnants of the last two signs on the building.  When I zoom in I can read (parts of) "Hualapai Trading Co" and also the word "Post" under the "Co". Then the next line "Hualapai Indian Reserve", then the third line "General Merchandise" and to the right of it "Indian Curios" but I think I can see bits of the words "Post Office" there too.  I found old postcards of these signs online, so I am filling in the covered parts of the sign from them.


 Across the street from the trading post is the Hualapai Veteran's Memorial. "Dedicated to the Hualapai men and women who served their country in times of war and peace.

This is a photo by Carol Highsmith is of Osterman's Gas Station taken in 2009.  Wikipedia lists it as the John Osterman Gas Station, but indicates it was built by John's brother Oscar in 1932.

This is the same gas station today. It still isn't pumping gas, but it has a coat of fresh paint and it looks like a new roof over the canopy.

 

I didn't actually see this gas station, but this was a neat picture so I thought I'd include it. The photo was taken by John Margolies in 1976 and his collection was purchased by the Library of Congress.

  Hackberry General Store Hackberry, AZ is effectively just the general store and a few acres of land around it. It is very much worth a stop for a drink and to look around. I went there twice, once in the evening on my drive east, then again when I came back west. The store is a low building that has it's front wall covered in stickers. There is a good sized parking area there. The address is 11255 E. Hwy 66, Hackberry, AZ 86411.   It used to be a gas station and there are at least 7 gas pumps out front, however, they are not all the same kind so they are probably not all from there (or at least not all active at the same time). Topock and Golden Shores Arizona on Route 66

Exit 1 in Arizona  I didn't though. I came in to Arizona from Needles, California. On the right as I crossed the Colorado River I saw the white arch "Old Trails" bridge. This bridge now carries a pipeline but used to Route 66.  After crossing the bridge I got off at the first exit but couldn't find a good spot to take the pictures. There aren't that many Route 66 specific sights in the Topock/Goldon Shores part of Arizona, and somehow I missed taking pictures of one of the important ones, so a few of these photos are from Wikimedia Commons instead of being ones I took.   Historic Old Trails Bridg e built in 1914 in Topock, Az. Sitgreaves Pass and Cool Springs Station, Arizona

  Sitgreaves Memorial Viewpoint This section of Route 66 is the curviest and steepest portion of the road.  It is an 8 mile section of the road that goes from Oatman, Arizona up Sitgreaves Pass. It is also called the "Arizona Sidewinder" because it has 191 or so curves and switchbacks with no guardrails.  It sounds scary, but as long as you go slow (everyone else is too, don't worry) it isn't as bad as it sounds. I'll note, however, that I was driving west to east which means I was on the inside of the road the whole time.  Maybe if I was driving east to west and was right up against the drop I'd have a different opinion. Summit Station and Ice Cream Parlor was at this turnout just below the summit. There's nothing left but a few bits of concrete in the ground.  However, this site has been repurposed as a memorial hill.  There are dozens of small memorials that dot the crest of the hill that you can walk around or through.
